I decided to take a trip to a planetarium in Hilo – Imiloa. They just reopened. They had three 2-hour blocks you could choose from to visit. I randomly picked the 1130 slot, which turned out perfect because the program they were doing in that slot was about navigating with the stars and I was the most interested in that topic of the three they had.
But first, here is a photo of the full moon from the other night. As I type this I think I included it in a previous post too. Oh well. It was so bright!
And another random photo – I tried Kava the other day. As was described to me, it has a very earthy flavor – true. What was not described to me up front is it makes your mouth a little numb. And apparently it makes you more sociable (not sure about that part). And I have since learned that it’s traditional to say “bula bula” (cheers) with pacific islanders.
Anyway, here’s the planetarium. It’s associated with the University of Hilo, Hawaii.
Beautiful tile in the lobby. Everybody had to show proof of vax, wear a mask, and hand sanitize basically before entering any new room or building.
Planetarium dome pre-show
It really was an interesting program. One thing I didn’t know is that one of the stars in the constellation Orion’s Belt is the only star viewable from both hemispheres – Delta or Minaka is the name.
There was a little native plant garden around the area too so I checked that out.
Later I got back to my room and George the cat was thirsty
And after the planetarium I went walking around Hilo – this is a Monkeypod tree I took this photo so you can see the actual scale of it against the bikes. Huge!
