Out of the Blue

Out of the blue I received an email from someone who works at David Zwirner Galleries, who came across my blog while doing research about Yayoi Kusama (it was my 5th Post about my So Cal trip, where I saw Yayoi Kusama’s exhibit at The Broad).  She requested that I add a link to their web page.  I checked it out and there is a lot of great contemporary art with a lot of detailed info about many, many artists including Yayoi Kusama.  Check it out!!  Spend a day perusing the galleries!

Another Performance at Delaweird

So, the Delaweird folks held a Final Friday Mixup last week, so, whoever wanted to could get matched up with somebody else and perform something on the fly.  There were 4 duos and 3 trios.

I was matched up with Ian, and our group’s name was “So What.”  I played my melodica, African thumb piano, tambourine, and a plastic bag.  Ian had an electronic box.

Delaweird

I had a new experience a few weeks ago – I went to a Delaweird event!

They generally meet the final Friday of the month (FF) and have different events each time.  The one I went to was titled FF83 Blind Date.  The premise was that people signed up ahead of time, then everybody showed up, and then, not unlike a blind date, two people who didn’t know each other were paired up to make sound/music together, improv-style. New Category and Other Stuff – link to a movie!

Long time no write, I know.  Since I’m not travelling things aren’t quite as exciting on a routine basis as they may be otherwise.

But on that note, I decided that I needed to add a new Category “Random” seems a bit too encompassing, although I may still use it from time to time.

So, the new category is Entertainment.  This will encompass movies, books, TV, anything that I come across that I think it cool.  I have a bunch of other stuff to add to this post, but be patient!

So, to use my new Category, here is a link to a movie that I was an extra in when I was a kid.  By happenstance somebody happened to do a YouTube search of this movie and found a nice clean copy of it (I had a DVD copied from an old VHS tape that was recorded off TV in the ’80’s, so you can imagine how bad THAT was!)

I was 12, and at the peak of my ugly tween years.  Bowl haircut, taller than most of the other kids, not smiling.  White sweater, blue dress, white bobbie socks.  I throw a ball over a girl’s head within the first 5 minutes, and I appear again near the end of the movie also.  But watch the whole thing.  It’s entertaining in a funny old-school movie kind of way (e.g., cheesy).  And there’s some stuff in there that isn’t really PC either, which makes it extra funny.

So, without further ado, here is “Lassie – The Road Back.” (it was a 4 part episode back in the day, and was later edited into a ~90 minute movie)

Badlands

OK, this will be a short post.  I have been wanting to see the movie “Badlands” for years.  Stars very young Sissy Spacek and Martin Sheen.  It is on Amazon Prime now.  I now see how Quentin Tarentino got his music for True Romance, and even kind of the story line.  What a great movie.

Some Music-y Things

For those that can read my Facebook posts, this will be a repeat.  I’m just pasting it here verbatim:

OMG. I’m listening to the Light Classical station and the song they’re playing is the song my washer and dryer play when they’re done! Liszt “Die Forelle/The Trout.” I was sitting here thinking ‘that sounds so familiar …’ That is so hilarious! Who knew?

Anyway, I’ve heard a couple of outstanding and brand new to me songs that aren’t new at all.

First is ‘Continental Drift’ by the Rolling Stones.  Wow!  Take a listen when you have time to just sit and listen – don’t listen if you’re going to be distracted:

In 1989, The Rolling Stones went to Tangier, Morocco for 3 days to record this song with the Master Musicians of Jajouka led by Bachir Attar for the Stones’ album Steel Wheels. After the recording sessions, Mick Jagger visited the village of Jajouka, which Brian Jones had visited in 1968. This song marked a return to the world music The Stones experimented with in the ’60s.
The squeal at the beginning is Keith Richards scraping a knife against a bicycle wheel.

Second is ‘Daydream’ by Robin Trower.  Wow again!  Again, listen when you’re not going to be distracted.
