Those of you who have been reading my blog for a while may recall a post about my Grandmother, Tye Leung Schulze. Well, now there is a video created by the PBS American Masters about her life.
She died when I was 14 so I didn’t know any of this until after she passed (and there is so much more that she did!). I do remember the funeral procession, a long slow parade through San Francisco Chinatown with a marching band playing funeral dirges and a large poster of her held high as we wound our way through the narrow streets.
She was born in 1887 and lived through the great SF earthquake of 1906, the Spanish Flu epidemic 1918 and the Bubonic Plague in 1900. I didn’t even know the bubonic plague had been in SF until my cousin told me yesterday (reference the book “Black Plague at the Golden Gate”).
I sure wish I had known all these things so I could have asked her about them. But, with all her accomplishments she was a humble person who just lived her life to help others. In the video, there is a photo of her with the grandchildren – i’m the one she’s holding in the photo!
