I left socked-in-by-fog Turtle Rocks and drove into town to drop something off at the post office. Then, it was off to Fort Bragg, about a 3 1/2 hour drive or so. And since I wasn’t in a hurry, I decided to drive on the Avenue of the Giants (as in Redwood Trees!)
Here are some photos:
Dyerville was a town on the Eel River that was washed away by flood waters in 1933-34.
I stopped along the way a few times to take photos, but they definitely don’t do the redwoods justice (no one was behind me).
I also ended up having to stop for a girl chasing her dog in the road. Luckily, she got him and nobody got hit by a car. Didn’t think to take a photo though.

I got going after a brief stop and came across this drive-thru tree. Decided to give it a whirl. Pulled up, no attendant but a slot saying the cost was $10. I had a $10 bill so put it in the slot. Drove thru some low hanging branches and then …
… I saw this! I thought, there is NO WAY I’m going to try to drive my car thru this, what a rip off!
But, they had cute playhouses made out of trees, and I found some reviews below that said the place was pretty cool. Guess I should have given it a harder chance. Oh well.
Finally got off of the Avenue of the Giants. For some reason I thought it was around 8-9 miles but in actuality it’s a little over 31 miles! Who knew? But it was definitely worth it – the redwoods tower over you for most of it. Smells great too – very fresh air!
Anyway, at Leggett it was time to head back over to the coast. I had no idea how wind-y the road was going to be. Here’s a screenshot of the map:
And once I got to the coast it was still a little wind-y but not quite as much.
