OK, going to try to catch up on the Spain part of this trip. My ‘Part 6’ post covered going from Llanes to Oviedo, so Part 7 will cover going from Oviedo to Tineo. (I have since removed the “Part” numbers and renumbered them by REI Day. I thought that made more sense …) This would have been on Tuesday 4/23.
This day we begin hiking on the Camino Primitivo, the oldest of all of the pilgrimage routes.
I took a ton of photos because it was so pretty. So, here you go!
We got up early in Oviedo to check out a local market. They weren’t quite open yet but there were a lot of interesting foods
I’m not sure that this pigeon was a paying customer – ha ha!
Then, back to the hotel to get on our bus to get to our start on the Camino Primativo. We got to ride through a tunnel!

This is where we had lunch – Bar El Tiro Horizonte. The owner took our photo and posted it on his FB page!

After lunch when we set out, we were told that we were hiking to an old monastery. Roger, who always walked really fast and would get way ahead of us, was way ahead again. I was behind Roger by about a quarter mile or so, and then Doug caught up to me and passed me, saying he’d catch up to Roger.
The path led to a T-stop with this sign. Roger decided that we were supposed to stay on the Camino de Santiago, so he went left. Doug followed him.
Unfortunately for them, they didn’t look closely enough at the sign. If they had, they would have noticed that somebody wrote ‘monasterio’ with a Sharpie, pointing to the right. They were missing for about an hour!
So, I was the first to arrive at the monastery, where our bus was waiting for us. The monastery dates back to the 12th century
UPDATE: I found out who the below saint is – it’s St. Roch – patron saint of Dogs and Dog Lovers. In an odd coincidence, in the past I’ve run a trail run called the St. Roch’s Trail Race, which features a full-immersion (i.e. over my head!) water crossing. The first time I ran it, I wasn’t expecting the full immersion – talk about a shock!
After spending some time learning about the monastery, it was time to head to the hotel – the Hotel Palacio de Meras. It was an old convent. I forgot to take photos of the room.
After dinner some of us adjourned to the bar. I enjoyed my first taste of Pacharan. I like it!!
