I finally finished my 9th art class project – a painting from a photo I took in Spain, along the El Camino de Santiago.
In order to make sure I had things in the right place, I ‘gridded’ the photo and the paper I was drawing on. Then I drew outlines on paper. When the drawing was done, I shaded the back side of the paper with charcoal, and then drew along the outlines so that the charcoal would transfer to my canvas.
First, here’s the photo.
I think this took me about 3 hours.
I’m pretty sure I forgot to take a photo after the second class, but here it is, after the third class. I started painting the mud in brown.
Fourth class. My teacher said, look at the mud. What color do you think it is? I was thinking, well, mud is brown! But, when I looked closer and she pointed it out, the highlights in the mud are lavender! I never would have thought that until she pointed it out. How cool is that?
She also pointed out that my background was too ‘linear’
Fifth class. Trying to make the background less linear…
Sixth. Starting to come together now!
Seventh. It’s getting there!
Eighth – I was hoping I would finish it this day.
And finally, it’s done! I spent 7 hours on the car alone! Sheesh!
I made the window!!! Only the second time I’ve done that!
So, this painting took me 9 classes, which translates into 18 hours, 7 of which were spent on the car alone. But, I’m really happy with how it came out. My next painting will be a landscape with ocean, along the Spanish coast. Stay tuned!
