OK, I finally finished my fifth art class project – “complex still life.”
Here are photos from Week 1 (Jan 22). First I had to decent how many lemons and/or limes I wanted to use, and then determine how I wanted them set up. I decided to cut one lime open. Here is the set up:
First thing is to ‘wash’ the canvas with a neutral color.
Second, you draw the shapes onto the canvas with charcoal. Once you are happy with the drawing, you spray it with fixative. Then, you start painting. Shadows first! So, the photo below is 2 hours in.
Week 2 (Jan 29). Saved the fruit from week 1 and set them up as close I could to how I had them before. Lime starting to look a little ragged!
Now I added the background and started to fill in the fruit. This was 2 hours worth of work, so 4 hours total in so far.
Week 3 (Feb 5). Another 2 hours down. 6 hours total so far. I was kind of ‘stuck’ this week so it probably doesn’t look like I did that much. But I did. If you compare to Week 2 you can see differences.
Week 4 (Feb 12). Now I’m getting somewhere! The cut open lime still needs work though. Another 2 hours in. 8 hours total so far.
OK, I did a little ‘homework.’ I knew the cut open lime needed work, so I wanted to practice during the week. I took a little canvas that I had painted on previously, and painted a lime wedge, trying to copy a photo of a lime wedge that I found online. I did it fairly quickly, so it doesn’t look all that great, but it helped me understand more how to paint the lime. I’ll probably try to finish the painting up better than it is now.
Week 5 (Feb 19). Back in class. Finally finished the painting after another 1.5 hours. 9.5 hours in total!
My teacher liked my painting enough to give it a coveted position in the window of our art academy! Woo hoo!
