London Day 1 – Design Museum: Kubrick!

After hitting the Tate Modern in the morning (cab ride over, walk back to hotel), I went to the Design Museum in the afternoon (cab ride over, walk back to hotel).  I must say, on the map, both walks back looked straightforward, but, they weren’t.  Each museum was roughly 2.5 miles from the hotel, but I’m pretty sure I added at least an extra half mile each time due to getting turned around.

Anyway, I digress.  The Design Museum currently has a temporary exhibit featuring Stanley Kubrick and his movies.  It was really neat.  Here are some photos:

Note the carpet below is from The Shining – that’s the entrance to the exhibit

Oscar for Special Effects for 2001: A Space Odyssey

Costumes and a photo of the extras used from Spartacus (which starred Kirk Douglas):

Props, costumes, and other paraphernalia from The Shining:

You can see in the notes above that Room Number 217 was used in the book (where the zombie-ish lady in the bathtub was).  The Timberline Hotel requested Kubrick to change the room number in the movie to a different number – to use a room number that did not exist in their hotel – because they were concerned that nobody would want to stay in that room.  Hence, in the movie it was Room 237.

The last scene of the movie:

Just a note – there was also a lot of info for Dr. Strangelove but I didn’t take any photos of that stuff.

And now on to 2001: A Space Odyssey:

If you saw the movie, you probably recall the astronaut “running” for exercise.  Below is the contraption built that rotated as he ran.  Quite a feat of engineering!

Here are costumes from Barry Lyndon:

And costumes / masks from Eyes Wide Shut

It was really neat to see these things up close – I’m glad I went.  The other good thing is the tickets were timed, and the museum ensured that the exhibit wasn’t too crowded at any specific time.  I also got a ticket for 4pm, which was good as the number of people going to the museum were dwindling down by then.

Hope your enjoyed this!
