There were a few groceries that I hadn’t found in town, and it’s a beautiful day here so I decided to walk to the Safeway to pick up some things. As I mentioned in the previous post, it’s about 2 miles each way. I’ve walked over there on a past trip and didn’t think it would be too bad.
On the way I found a Faery door in a tree with a face on it!
The walk over wasn’t bad. I had forgotten about a couple spots where there really isn’t a sidewalk, but there’s a little dirt path you can walk on. I also conveniently forgot how hilly the walk is. When I did it last time I was here I took a really hilly street that I avoided this time, but, the walk still was rather hilly.
In one spot I turned around to check traffic and saw somebody approaching from behind on a sit-down scooter. I kept turning around to check where it was because the walking lane was narrowing and I wanted to let them go first.
It turned out to be an older gentleman (I feel like he may have been 90). As he sped past me he said “I’d race you but I have a very busy schedule and I don’t have time!” and we both laughed and I said, “you’d probably beat me anyway!”
But, I caught up to him at the corner as we waited for the green light. Then things took an interesting turn. He looked at me and said “It’s a glorious day to be outside. It’s very important to be outside. We all should listen to the earth, it’s very important. Before, you and I had said hello and that would have been it. But we were supposed to talk more and now this is something we will both remember.” I’m paraphrasing a little bit because I can’t remember his exact words, but I told him I definitely agreed with him and that I wished Everybody would listen to the earth. But wow, what a cool thing to happen!
When the light changed off he rushed.
There are some little shops by the Safeway so I walked around those first before going in the store. Got what I needed (forced myself to not buy too much, being aware that I was going to have to carry it all back). Then started the walk back.
The walk turned into a bit of a trudge but I kept going.
A few blocks from my AirBnB there was a couple walking their dog, coming towards me. We said ‘hi’ and I said “I had the bright idea to WALK to Safeway!” and the woman said “Hey I was thinking about doing that later – thanks for saying that!”
